Number 5 of the Global Goals – Gender Equality: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Gender inequality thrives across the world, in all shapes and forms.

But how does your gender define you?

And why you should never let it hold you back throughout life.

equality (noun)

the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities

feminism (noun)

the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

Not that an explanation should be needed, but here is a brilliant talk about why gender equality works for us all…

We see gender defining all aspects of our lives, from social perspectives to employment, we live in gender boxes, but maybe it’s time to break out of those and define ourselves by our own strength.

The Fawcett Society undertook a survey of attitudes towards gender in 2016 Britain, with some interesting results

Only one in twenty (4%) people in the UK said they don’t know what feminism stands for. However 3 in 5 (61%) people in Britain believe in equality for women and men but don’t describe themselves as feminist. Only 7% self-identify as feminist and one in ten (9%) think feminism is irrelevant.

Gender Equality
83% of the British public support equality of opportunity for women AND this included even higher support from men 86% than women 81%.
BUT more women compared to men said they don’t know whether they want equality of opportunity

Almost half 47%of Britons think they would benefit if society was more equal..but almost half (47%) think a more equal society would not impact their lives.

A quarter (26%) think men and women are currently equal in the UK.
Although almost two thirds (62%) think more needs to be done to achieve gender equality
only one in ten  think equality has gone too far.
